Live performance at OMH - 'Strange Meetings': the final fifteen months of poet soldier Wilfred Owen of Oswestry and Shrewsbury.
Written and performed by Shaun Higgins, this one-man play follows Owen's admission to hospital with shell-shock, his auspicious meeting with Siegried Sassoon, the resulting flourish of poetry, his return to France, and his fatal battle in November 1918.
Drawing on Owen's letters alongside biographical accounts, revealing his thoughts and inspirations, this dramatic presentation brings to life the story of a troubled soul, is alive with language and wry humour, and shows us Owen as the complicated and misunderstood person he was. Followed by an informal audience Q&A. OMH 17 August at 7.30pm. Buy tickets here
POSTPONED until 28 September (picture above) 'Hidden Master: the legacy of George Platt Lynes', 28 September at 7pm Old Market Hall. 'An intimate look at a pioneering gay artist, who took radical photographs of the male nude and influenced a generation.' Tickets here
Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival ends... From its first festival in 2006 until today, the Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival has been a source of pride; screening films from around the world and reflecting the lives of LGBT+ people.
This would not have been possible without you, our supporters and sponsors.
Last year the Trustees resolved to cease the festival’s activities and wind up the Charity.
This will happen later this year. We have always been careful in our use of the money you donated and our final project was, working with Safe Ageing No Discrimination (SAND), to commission 5 short videos.
They are excellent and illustrate powerfully the lives and experiences of old and older LGBT+ people in Shropshire.
A key reason for our decision to wind up, put simply, is that the world has changed hugely since 2006; it is now so much easier to access films of interest to LGBT+ people and for us to find positive reflections of our lives - the festival met a need and has served its purpose- new ventures will emerge. Again, thank you so much.
You can view our reports over the years on the Charity Commission website:

SAND Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin has been the base for a ground-breaking initiative to improve the experiences of older and old LGBT+ people since its founding in 2012. In 2019, SAND secured lottery funding for a project called EMBRACE A Culture of Inclusion which included encouraging health, social care and other providers of services for older and old people in the county to sign up to a Covenant addressing the key question “How would I, as an LGBT+ older person, know that I would feel safe and comfortable approaching your organisation for support, advice or a service?” Over 30 organisations employing over 20,000 staff have signed up. Whilst the funded project has come to an end – the work has not. SAND has taken an active, celebratory and positive decision not to apply for more funding. SAND believes that there is enough capacity within these local organisations now to continue and grow inclusive practice. Something very exciting has happened in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin over the past 5 years - a movement to embrace a culture of inclusion, which everyone can join and build together. The website remains live lgbtsand.com; you can watch a summary of the past twelve years here.
